Job Description

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County energetic, creative and organized Manager, Performing Arts Education to oversee all performing arts education programs. Reporting to the Director, Education and Programs, the Performing Arts Education Manager is responsible for creating – in collaboration with staff throughout the NHM and Page – the overall vision of dynamic and educational experience for Museum visitors through the theatrical and visual arts. This includes oversight of the performance production, staffing, budget, space and property management (life-size puppets), contract negotiation, and content development. The Manager, Performing Arts Education needs to work with people, be detail-oriented, have strong organizational skills, the ability to follow through consistently, be flexible and adaptable while maintaining the highest professional and visitor experience standards and will demonstrate a desire to learn, grow and excel.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

Provide the vision of the Performing Arts Education Program in support of all public and educational programs, interpretation, research and special events at the Museum. Oversight of performing arts education programs at both NHM and the Page (including Ice Age Theater) museums. Provide a recruitment and training program that creates, sustains, supports and recognizes a diverse workforce of staff members responsive to the needs of the NHM visitors and museum requirements. Supervises and ensure an engaging and rigorous training program focused on interpretive content delivery for engaging visitors and on the physicality of the life-sized puppets (when applicable). Direct supervision of a coordinator and performing arts stuff. Oversee the audition and training process of all new staff related to the program. Liaison with other departments at NHM. Supports team and volunteers in any administrative capacity. Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Theater, Art Education or relevant discipline from an accredited college or university. 3-5 years’ experience with theatrical production, including physical and movement based theater or comparable experience in an educational or non-profit environment. 3-5 years’ experience in supervising a creative performing arts team including actors, puppeteers and program coordinators. Ability to work independently to make key program decisions and foster a team environment to create dynamic performing arts education programming. Knowledge and experience in arts integration goals and objectives, curriculum, teaching techniques, current trends, research and materials of instruction in a field of specialization. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, students, parents and community. Experience with educational program development within a theater environment preferred, including full body puppets and physical theater. Interest and capacity to understand and share a range of NHM content, and ability to collaborate with a wide variety of professionals from diverse fields. Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Experience with project and budget management, contract negotiation, production coordination and scheduling. Experience in script reading and critique preferred. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to follow through. Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends. Standard schedule will include at least one weekend day per week.

Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a full time, regular, exempt position.
